Wichita Mid-Continent Airport was the previous name of the airport. The name was scheduled to change by the city of Wichita on March 31, 2015. Still, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) made the official change on November 13, 2014, to meet a deadline for publishing new aeronautical charts and airport directories. The brand-new terminal debuted on June 3, 2015, a Wednesday.

History of Wichita Airport

The largest airport in Wichita, which moved from the southeast to the city's southwest side in 1924, has had three major terminals.

Over 100,000 people gathered in Wichita for the National Air Congress in October 1924. City planners used the occasion to solicit donations for the proposed Wichita Municipal Airport.

The event was successful, and on June 28, 1929, the airport's groundbreaking ceremonies were held. The distance between the airport and the older Wichita city limits was about 6 miles (10 km).

The Kansas National Guard's 127th Observation Squadron was the first armed force sent to the Wichita airport when World War II began in August 1941.

The U.S. Air Force took ownership of the airport on May 31, 1951. Until the new city airport was finished in October 1954, civil and military flights were accommodated at the airport.

The Wichita Municipal Airport was renamed Wichita Air Force Base, McConnell Air Force Base, and its current name.

The City of Wichita eventually bought the original terminal in 1980. In the late 1980s, volunteers entered the building and started the laborious cleaning process with wheelbarrows and shovels.

On April 19, 1991, the Kansas Aviation Museum officially opened to display the state's aviation heritage.
