Wichita: Wichita Art Museum

Address: 1400 W. Museum Blvd., Wichita, KS 67203, United States

Phone: +1 316-268-4921

The cultural center of the Midwest, Wichita, is a city that surprises the variety of art found there.

As a result of Louise Caldwell Murdock's will, which established a trust to launch the Roland P. Murdock Collection of art in honor of her husband, the museum was founded in 1915. The trust would buy works of art by "American painters, potters, sculptors, and textile weavers" for the City of Wichita.

Artwork from other museums was borrowed for the museum's 1935 opening. The Murdock Collection's first piece was acquired in 1939. Elizabeth Stubblefield Navas, a friend of Mrs. Murdock, chose and bought American art for the Murdock Collection until 1962.

In 1963, a new lobby and two additional wings were added to the building. A foundation was established, and the city erected a brand-new, more extensive climate-controlled facility in the 1970s.

Edward Larrabee Barnes created the current structure.

Tera Hedrick, an art historian, was appointed curator in 2017 after acting interim.

The museum declared that it would start remodeling its main entrance and lobby in January 2020.

Your creativity will be inspired by Wichita's vibrant public art installations and the world's most giant mural created by one artist.

The First Friday of every month marks the opening of new exhibits and performances at Wichita's most well-known art museums and neighborhood galleries.

Thousands of people come to downtown Wichita for this free event each year to enjoy the art, food, and live entertainment.

Take a stroll through Bradley Fair in September for a one-of-a-kind outdoor art experience during the festival known as Autumn & Art, which attracts artists from all over the nation. Wichita is home to several outstanding historical and educational museums.

The goal of the Wichita Art Museum is to foster community orientation by bringing together people, ideas, and American art.

The price of museum admission varies depending on the day. The ticket prices are as follows:

  • Tuesday to Friday and Sunday: Adult - $10, Senior Citizen - $5, College Students -$3, Youth (Ages 5-17) - $3, and Children (under 5) - Free.
  • Saturday – All visitors - Free.

The Wichita Art Museum's galleries operate from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. On certain holidays as well as every Monday, the museum is closed.
